India Paymentselement

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) vs.National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has partnered to launch the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) of India for feature phones called UPI 123Pay on 8 March 2022.Earlier UPI could be accessed through NUUP (Unified Payment Platform of India) using the code *99#. But this feature was very unpopular and thus UPI 123Pay was born.

What is UPI 123Pay

UPI 123 Pay is an instant payment solution for feature phone (non-smartphone) users, allowing them to quickly and easily use theUnified Payment Interface of India(UPI) payment service; it allows users to make payments without using the Internet. The service is designed to be more inclusive, reaching out to about 400 million feature phone users in India. The service uses account numbers and phone numbers while utilising Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) signalling technology and follows the UPI two-factor authentication protocol for transactions.

How UPI 123Pay makes payments on feature phones

To use the UPI 123Pay service, users must create on their feature phone theUPI ID.

Step 1 - Dial *99# and select your bank name

Step 2 - Enter the last six digits of your debit card and the expiry number.

Step 3 - Thereafter, you will be asked to set the UPI PIN.

Step 4 - After setting the UPI PIN, the UPI ID will be activated.

How to use UPI 123Pay

UPI 123 Pay will help feature phone users conduct a large number of transactions based on four technological alternatives. These include calls to IVR (Interactive Voice Response) numbers, app functionality, missed call based methods and proximity voice based payments.

via a predefined IVR numberUPI payments

Through predefined IVR numbers (080 4516 3666 and 080 4516 3581 and 6366 200 200), the user must initiate a secure call from his/her feature phone to a predefined number. After completing the UPI enrolment procedure, the user will be able to start financial transactions without an Internet connection. The IVR provides customers with multiple language options.

UPI payments via missed call payments

The missed call-based method allows users to make missed calls from a number provided by their commercial bank to access their bank account and perform routine transactions such as sending or receiving payments, utility bills, electricity bills, mobile bills and other payments. The commercial bank will create a token using the subscriber's mobile phone number and the amount of the purchased bill. Upon receipt of the token, the Subscriber must make a missed call to the number specified by Commercial Bank. Immediately thereafter, the user will receive an incoming call asking them to enter their UPI PIN to verify the transaction.

UPI payments through OEM-implemented functions

In this digital solution, users will get an app on their feature phone, just like with multipleUPI Functions like a smartphone. Most of the UPI features are currently available except for scanning payments.

UPI payments through voice-based technology

The technology uses sound waves to enable contactless, offline and proximity data communications on any device. Users can tap any phone to make UPI payments to merchants using Tone Tag's VoiceSe payment solution. Users can dial an IVR number and select the payment option to the merchant.
