■ Alipay and WeChat Pay now support international CUP cards!
Today (6 November), UnionPay International, a subsidiary of China UnionPay, announced that international UnionPay cards can now fully support bundled Alipay. WeChat Pay, supported by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), has also launched the service. This means that from today, foreign visitors to China can download the Alipay or WeChat apps, bind their foreign-issued UnionPay cards, and enjoy the same convenience of code-sweeping payments as domestic users.
According to the report, this innovative payment method will provide more payment convenience for foreigners travelling, working and living in China. During the promotion period, cardholders will enjoy zero domestic transaction fees. The service covers all scenarios such as dining, accommodation, travelling, sightseeing, shopping, entertainment, medical care and study, and supports main scan, being scanned and in-app payment. The card binding process is simple and can be completed quickly by providing card information such as card number and expiry date, which is verified by the card issuer.
It is understood that more than 25 million UnionPay cards have been issued in 83 overseas countries and regions and can be used across borders in 183 countries and regions. This year, UnionPay also launched the Jinxiu Zhonghua Card designed for foreign visitors to China, which comes with a variety of card benefits and special discounts from local merchants, and has been widely welcomed by cardholders.
