Have you ever answered a phone call or received a text message informing you that you have won a lucky prize and just need to confirm your personal and account information? Perhaps some of you were tempted to deposit a small amount of money into an unknown account in the expectation that the person would fulfil their promise and you would receive the prize. But in the end you don't receive that prize. This is a typical social engineering scam. How does the scam work?

Scammers are getting extremely creative with these scams. They send spam messages to real buyers and customers of real online marketplaces or websites offering seemingly wonderful deals and prizes. Here are some of the actual text messages that are sent

Do you want to buy the latest foldable phone for just Rs. 10,000?

You are our lucky customer. Transfer Rs. 5,000 to get your 180 cc motorbike.

You have won an SUV worth Rs. 31 Lakh in the lucky draw and you have to pay only Rs. 5,000 as registration fee.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Ignore this type of information.

Verify this information through official customer service or by visiting the original website. Don't trust fake or similar-sounding website names.

Don't be tempted by promises of lotteries or prizes that you didn't apply for. If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably a scam.
