Fraud Awareness - Understanding Voice Phishing Scams and Keeping Your Information Safe, Paytm Payments Bank

Fraud prevention is especially important in this day and age. The so-called "Voice Phishing" (Vishing) is a type of fraud wherein the fraudster lures the customer into revealing confidential personal information over the phone, such as customer ID, M-PIN, password, verification code, credit/debit card number, card expiry date and CVV code. The fraudsters may disguise themselves as Paytm or Paytm Payments Bank officials or even use technology to mask the real phone number so that you see the caller ID as a legitimate customer service number 0120 3888 388 or 011 3399 6699.

Here are some of the common luring techniques used by scammers:

1. "Hello Sir/Madam, you have won an exclusive offer for top customers only. Please provide us with your credit/debit card details so that we can transfer the prize to your bank account."

2. "Hello, this is Paytm customer care. We are running a nationwide identity verification campaign. After completing the identity verification, you will be able to receive up to Rs. 10,000 on your Paytm wallet. However, I need you to provide proof of identity and credit/debit card details."

3. "Hello, this is Paytm customer care. I am happy to inform you that you have received an additional Rs. 5000 cashback on your latest purchase. Please provide your credit/debit card number so that we can transfer the amount directly to your bank account."

4. "Congratulations! You have been nominated as a 'Top Paytm Merchant' in your region and are now eligible for a special enhancement pack. This will further enhance the limit of your Paytm wallet. Please provide proof of identity and credit card details to avail this offer."

5. "Hey, this is customer service from Paytm/Paytm Payments Bank. As we have recently transferred your wallet from One97 to Paytm Payments Bank, I need to verify your account otherwise your balance will be lost. You need to reset your password to paytm123 or some other fixed setting and tell me the one-time verification code. Alternatively, you need to provide details of the card used for wallet recharge and share the OTP received on your mobile."
